DIY Halloween Decor: Black Cats and Pumpkins from 2x4 Wood

Hey there! It's been a better week this week and the weather is finally acting like it had a Mama!  Anywhoobs, let get on with this project.

Halloween is a time for spooky decorations and creative crafts that add a festive touch to your home. This year, why not try something a bit different? In this blog post, I will guide you through the process of making these adorable black cat and pumpkin decorations using 2x4 wood. Not only are these DIY projects fun and easy, but they also add a rustic charm to your Halloween decor. Let's dive in!

Materials Needed:

  1. 2x4 wooden boards
  2. Saw (chop or jigsaw)
  3. Clamps
  4. Hand sander and Sandpaper (medium grit)
  5. Paints (black, orange)
  6. Paintbrushes (sponge brushes work well)
  7. Google eyes
  8. Wood glue
  9. Wood sealer (optional)

Project 1: Black Cat

First mark your cuts with a pencil and cut to length. Use a chop saw or circular saw to cut to length.  Cut a cat at 12", 10" and 8" tall.  The ears are 2" tall.  Measure 2" down from top middle and make a mark, then use a ruler and make a line from each corner to the 2" mark.

Used the jig saw to cut out the ears.  Clamp the 2x4 to a table and then get to cutting.  Be sure to wear your safety glasses please!

Smooth out all the rough edges using a mouse sander and some medium grit paper.

Use black acrylic paint and a sponge brush to paint them.  Paint all sides except the bottom and let them dry.

If you like distressing, use the mouse sander again to distress the front edges only.

Lastly, tie a raffia bow around the neck and add googly eyes.

Project 2: Pumpkin

Similar to the cat, measure and mark the dimensions for the pumpkin.

Cut the 2 x 4s at 5" and 4" (2 of each size).  Use the mouse sander to smooth all the rough edges.

Use hot glue and glue the pieces of wood together.  The two 5" pieces go together in the middle and one 4" piece goes on either side. You can also use wood glue, but that takes longer to cure.

Using some orange acrylic paint and a sponge brush Give them a good coat of paint.  All sides except the bottom.

For the stem, it is measured at 2 1/2" tall by 1" square.  Glue it on the top middle.  Distress the whole thing with the sander and add a raffia bow.

Note: A stick from your yard or a cork would work for a stem also.

Congratulations! You've just created charming Halloween decorations using 2x4 wood. These black cats and pumpkins will undoubtedly add a unique touch to your festive decor. Feel free to get creative with colors, shapes, and sizes to make them your own. Remember, the best part of DIY projects is the personal touch you bring to them. Happy Halloween crafting!
