Pallet to Patio Firewood Holder

Happy Winter! I hope your Christmas was wonderful and you're looking forward to a bright New Year!  I was sick all through the Christmas holiday with the Flu.  Yall, that stuff is no joke, you don't want it!  I had the Flu type B which is apparently the lesser of the two types.  If B is the lesser, I never want to see what A is like, that's for sure! I'm finally doing much better now.

Anywhoobs, recently Hometalk featured my post on how my honey built this awesome little table for our grill to sit on.  He just used an old pallet we had lying around.  That feature reminded me to tell you what else we did with this little table.

Getting ready for Winter, we figured out that we could also use our little table for a firewood holder on the patio too!  We simply unloaded all the goodies we had stored here and flipped it upside down.

Then, one wheel barrow at a time, we loaded it up with all different sizes of firewood for the Winter months.  Here in Texas its a hit and miss on cold weather, so we may or may not ever even have a fire in the fireplace this year.

Here it is all stacked nicely waiting to be used.  We used the small wooden crate we already had on hand (it normally holds our radio out here on the patio) to hold our smaller pieces that don't normally stack well.

Depending on our weather, this amount of wood could take us all the way through Winter or, we could use this up all in one weekend.  You just never know about Texas weather!

From Spring to Winter we can use our little pallet table year round and we love it!

How to Build a Pallet Planter Box

Here I am again with another pallet project for you. We're on a roll!  When you have lots of pallets, you use them!  Recently my honey had a morning off and he built this planter box for me while I was at work.  It was a fun surprise to come home to!

See it over there to the left?  I ended up planting a tomato and a jalapeno plant in there so we can have fresh salsa this summer.

I think it turned out awesome and again like the patio pallet table he built, he took all the pictures for this one. Thank you baby! :)

He started out with some left over pallet boards from our DIY Pallet Wood Wall

You will need nine (9) pieces of pallet wood cut at 34 -1/4" long each.

Using a builder's pencil, mark all your boards first, then cut.  Measure twice, cut once!

He used our chop saw to make quick work of the cutting.

Now you have the bottom and sides and you're almost ready to assemble.

He used two pieces cut at 13" to hold all the pieces of the bottom together.

NOTE:  Your measurements may be different if your pallet wood is another size than what we used here.

He placed them 5" in from each end.

Secure each bracing piece with 1-1/2" wood screw and a power drill.

You will need two side braces cut at 11-1/2" long for each side, so in total you need four (4) pieces cut at 11-1/2" long.  Again, they are 5 inches in from the ends and you will drop down from the top, 1 inch so that you have an amount hanging off the bottom edge to attach to the bottom section.  He used his nail gun and brads to hold it all in place until he was ready to screw it together.

 

Now you are ready to assemble the sides to the bottom of the planter.  Again he used 1-1/2" wood screws to hold it all together.

Now for the ends.  You will need to cut two (2) each of the following sizes.  These are cut at an angle so that the planter graduates in size from bottom to top.

2 - 18"
2 - 16"
2 - 15"

This is how he explained it to me when I asked how he got the angles.  "Because its pallet wood and its imperfect, there was lots of guessing involved".  He got the size of the largest (top - 18") board and held it up to the planter and marked with a pencil the part that needed to be cut off.  Using the chop saw, he cut along his line he made.  Then, using the nail gun, he tacked it to the planter and followed doing the same with the next two pieces.  I hope that is understandable.

He literately made this up just out of his head, he did not have any directions to go by.  This is what he does.  IDK, but I can't do that so I don't understand it! lol!  It looks perfect to me!

Since its a planter, we need drain holes to let the water get out.  He used a hole drill bit to make several holes all over the bottom of the planter.

We lined the inside of the planter with landscaping fabric.  We used the staple gun to hold it all in place.

Next, we filled it up with garden soil and we were ready to plant!

I just planted one tomato and one pepper.  We'll see how they do.  I'm ready for fresh salsa, so I hope it works!  It'll be nice just to step out on the patio and grab a fresh tomato.

How to Build a Pallet Table for the Patio

Last weekend it was finally warm enough to clean off the patio and get it ready to use this year!  Last year, my honey bought that cute little grill.  It's from Buc-ee's.  We love it because although it looks small, it holds quite a lot of food! Anywhoobs!  He wanted a stand for it so he didn't have to set it on our awesome table that he also put together for us.  The table is just too low to stand comfortably at anyway.

It looks pretty good on the patio with our awesome table! Good job honey!

This is just a standard sized pallet and the wood its made out of is pretty sturdy.

We used some scrap 2 x 4 for the legs.  Most tables are 36 inches tall, this one ended up 32 inches tall so we wouldn't have to go buy any wood.  We just used what we had.

He removed the center board from underneath the pallet using the circular saw.  Save these pieces, you'll need them later.

We cut the 2 x 4s used for the legs at 32 inches long, times 4.  Four legs.  We used the chop saw for that.

Here are the four legs cut at 32 inches each.

Next, using the circular saw again, we cut the pallet into two pieces.  This makes the top and the front shelf.

There is still three boards on the table top and only two on the shelf.

Next, we grabbed the four legs and pre-drilled holes for the screws that will hold them onto the table.

Three holes in each leg top.

We used 2" wood screws and the hand drill to attach the legs.

We added the back to legs first, then laid it down and added the shelf using the same 2" wood screws.

Next we added the front legs, directly behind the shelf.

We used a scrap piece of pallet wood and added a brace between the back legs for sturdiness.  And then the rest of our 2 x 4s to go from the front leg to the back leg to make it even more sturdy.

Since our shelf has no bottom to hold things, we used more scrap wood to add the bottom. Remember the pieces we cut off in the beginning?

The shelf bottoms were added using more wood screws.

Now we have the perfect little table for the grill.  We can also use it for potting plants when the grill isn't in use.

My honey wants to paint it bright colors, but I kind of like it the way it is!  What do you think?
