Weatherproofing is Important When Installing a New Front Door

Hey there! How's the weather in your neck of the woods?  Cold, warm or otherwise?

Weatherproofing is important when installing a new door in an old house!

Since its been too cold to go outside, I've been doing a few things inside that needed to get done.  When I moved in last year, the ceiling and walls were all redone with a fresh coat of paint throughout the house.  None of the trim work or doors had been painted though.  I had been caulking and painting the baseboards and trim in the living room and decided that I needed a new door.  The old door did not seal properly and was letting in LOTS of cold air through and around the edges.  It also was not safe because it didn't latch properly half the time. Old house problems.

I had no idea how to replace a door, so my oldest son came to the rescue and helped me.  He confessed he'd never replaced a door other than a screen door, so it was new to him too.  We figured it out with a little help from my brother and it looks really nice now.

I was a bad blogger and did not video or take pictures of us removing the old door and frame, nor did I video or take pictures of the new stuff going in!  It was a booger bear!  Old houses yall! Actually, removing the old door and frame was not the problem.  The new door and frame was the actual problem.  The pre-made notches for the hinges that were already there on the door and the frame, DID NOT match up! You read that right, no matchy uppy!

We called my brother, he brought his router and he fixed it for us.  Woohoo, thank goodness for multi talented baby brothers!

As I mentioned above, the door was very drafty.  I knew why when we opened it up.  There was gaping holes and cracks everywhere!  I could actually see daylight through the cracks.  I filled those cracks up with some handy expanding foam.

After the foam dried completely, we added a new trim kit. We attached it with the brad nailer for fast assembly.

I finished off with a new naked wooden door transition strip that I still need to stain to match my floors.

I finished the whole install off by caulking all the remaining cracks and crevices around the new trim and then painted it all white to match my baseboards and other trim.

No more cold drafts now and the new door latches properly with a tight seal.

Now I need to decide on a door color. Any ideas?
