Easy Way to Remove Pet Stains

If you have a pet, especially an elderly pet, you probably need to read this post!  Of course I went right to Pinterest to find a way to battle these pet stains.  It only takes two ingredients and a tiny little bit of elbow grease and your carpet will look nice and smell way better too!
This is one area that was a problem.  There are normally two areas that I have to keep a constant vigilance over.
This is Trevor, my grandpaw dog.  He will be 16 next month and for his whole entire life he NEVER had accidents in the house.  Just this past year he started to go in the house instead of asking to go outside.  Poor dude!  Keeping our light colored carpet clean and keeping the house urine odor free is a chore now!  Sometimes I catch the accident right after it happens, but mostly he does this while we aren't home throughout the day and that causes the staining.
All you need is Hydrogen Peroxide and Dawn dish soap (the blue one is best).
The mixture is 1 to 1 and I had a large area to cover so I mixed 1/4 cup Dawn and 1/4 peroxide in an oblong dish so I could get my scrub brush into it easily.
Using a stiff bristle brush, dip into the solution and apply to the stained carpet.  Rub lightly to get the solution into the carpet fibers.  Let this sit on the carpet for about 30 minutes and then blot with paper towels (I use my foot) to remove all the extra moisture you can.  Keep blotting until the area is almost completely dry.
I apologize and sometimes I wonder if I'm a good blogger at all because I forget to take pictures of steps of the process I'm trying to document.  Gosh!  I failed to take pictures of me blotting up the excess moisture from the carpet.  Here are a couple of before and afters to show the difference a little 2 part solution makes.
And one more here.  After the carpet is good and dry,  I vacuum the entire area.  For a few more days we have a nice looking carpet.  Someday I want to install tile.  *Sigh
A larger shot of the before.....
And then the after.  Its nice while it last, but I know he will just create the same scene over again soon.  At least I have this method to make it better!

It doesn't have to be done all at once.  It is a slow process in the works! C-ya next time!

  1. Hi Dee Dee! I found you from HomeTalk and love your tip. One question though, how do you rinse the soap out of your carpet so the soap won't attract more dirt? Thanks bunches, Christina

    1. I have not ever had to rinse the areas, I just make sure that I blot it to nearly dry each time. So far I've not had an issue with the areas attracting dirt. Thanks for visiting our blog! :)

    1. I would try it on a place that doesn't show first. Peroxide can bleach colors out sometimes.

    1. No, I would not try it. The dawn will cause problem with the machine. Try this solution: http://ourcloverhouse.blogspot.com/2012/11/diy-carpet-cleaning.html This is what we use to clean our carpets on a regular basis.

    1. Hi Carolyn! No, I would not use this solution. The peroxide will bleach dark colored fabric.

  13. NO NO NO NO NO!!!! TOO MUCH DISH DETERGENT. You only need a few drops of Dawn, any more and you will not be able to get the soap out of the carpet. I use 2 cups hydrogen peroxide and 2 DROPS Dawn and it works. No soap buildup.

  15. Hi, thanks for sharing your stain removal solution. As a long time veterinary technician I would like to suggest (if you have not already) have your veterinarian examine your dog, and be sure to tell him/her about the loss of house training. Take a urine sample with you as well when you do go. At his age there are multiple reasons why he may be having trouble holding his urine until someone gets home. A complete physical exam including a urinalysis and blood work Is the place to start. Have a great day.

  16. I've been using this formula for some time. I use it in my kitchen to, but for that, I add mostly white vinegar and some water to the mixture. I use plain hydrogen peroxide, blue Dawn and a generous dose of table salt for weeds in my gutter. Haven't had a weed since! I don't use this mixture on the lawn though because it would likely damage or kill any grass that is sprayed nearby. I also use it to deter or kill insects in my basement which has yet to be finished. I detest those ugly house centipedes which are so common here. I do get a straggler from time to time but it helps to keep most away and spiders will keep away too, which is the centipede's favorite food.

  17. Thank you for this great DIY - I have 3 cats with hair balls once in a while.
On another subject - I love your cained antique chairs ... I have 6 just like them.

    1. Thank you and you're welcome! We have three cats too and I can sometimes clean up a hair ball mess with only a Clorox wipe which saves getting the carpet even wetter. I've had my two cained chairs for about 18 years now, love them! :)

  18. I use pure hydrogen peroxide for smaller spots the stain comes right out my carpet is very light in color. In my shampooer I use "OUT" for pet urine it has an enzyme in it to neutralize the urine.

  20. Great tip, thank you! Sadly the trip to the vet almost always lands you with a diagnosis of old age (duh), some calming plug ins and $1000 bill.

  21. F.Y.I. -- On July 26 2016 "echo" made a statement about the blue on blue that shows your responses. I am reading this on a Samsung Galaxy and I also see blue text on a blue background.
My little senior aged dog also began to decline rapidly last March. He passed over in August. Incontinence was just one of his health problems.

  22. I'm so sorry for your loss. In May we lost our 19 year old pug a day before her 20th birthday so I know how painful it was to lose Trevor.
Wonderful blog, thank you for the tip. As we have a new puppy in the house, (our 5 year old needed the companionship after losing his best friend) I have used your tip several times and it works great. We've had the pup 2 months and already had the carpets cleaned once but really can't afford $300 on a monthly basis so this will be great in between cleanings. Thanks again. Blessings.

  26. Have you tried a male doggy diaper? My daughter had border collie that leaked all the time. We made a doggy diaper from a piece of fabric that is a little longer than the dog is at that part of is body. You sew Velcro or some people will know it as hook and loop. Then place a sanity napkin on the inside next to the dog. To cover the problem part. Please don't leave on all day the dog can get a rash from the wet diaper just as a baby. This is great for dogs that just like to mark their territory.
The nice thing you can use a scrap frabric or go with neat colors. I would suggest you use 100 percent cotton.

  30. Hi, Dee, I'm going to give this a try, thanks for the tip. I have one for you -- buy those pet pads and place them in your grandpaw dog's favorite spots -- he will likely pee on the pad more often than not, and you will need to do less scrubbing! I used them for my dog (now 3 1/2 and no more accidents, thank goodness) when she was a puppy, and most of them she hit the pad.

  32. Will this work on the scent of residual lingering cat urine? I have an expensive fringed area rug, that my now sadly deceased cat peed on one edge and the cotton fringe. I treated it with every product under the sun, but after months it still holds a bit of the scent. Might this work?
