Flower Pot Makeover

Do you have some old flower pots you'd like to make look different? I have a pair of flower pots that I bought about 7 years ago and at the time, I liked them.  Now, not so much!  With just a little left over paint, it was easy to get them looking like brand new for a fresh new Spring season!

I've been working on our front porch trying to get it cleaned up and spruced up for Spring.  It's sad, but I totally neglect the front porch and patio in the Winter, so when Spring rolls around, there is always lots of work to do.

With a little paint from our paint stash, I was able to make my old flower pots new again!

After I got the porch cleaned up those two pots were pretty much waving at me and saying, "Hey, are we old and tired or what?"  "We need a make over!"  Ok, maybe my flower pots didn't wave or talk to me, but, ya know what I mean! lol!

Here you can see the tops are glazed and shiny and the bottoms are a natural finish.  I wondered how the two different finishes would except paint, they both did fine!

I went to our paint stash and grabbed my gloves, a paint brush and some paint along with my paint can opener.  The paint I grabbed is an off white color that is intended for inside use, but I figured that since they will be under cover and out of the the direct weather, that it probably wouldn't matter at all.  I'll love it if they get all chippy and old looking anyway!

First I painted the entire pot the off white color.  I wasn't really loving it at this point. It looked really plain and boring to me.

So back to the paint stash I went to grab the same color paint that we used to match all of our house trim.  I'm not of the color name though because we literally took a piece of the trim to Lowe's and had them color match it.

Using my paint brush with very little paint on it, (dry brushing) I just lightly swiped a few brush strokes on being sure to stay within the top part that was glazed in the beginning.  Still not sure I like it at this point!

Back to the shop I went and grabbed a 120 grit (used) piece of sand paper and using circular motions, I got to distressing.  If you've been visiting my blog for a while, you'll already know I do the distressing thing to almost everything I paint.  I like it!

Now the bottom part was pretty much the same, but just look at the top part how it gave it that cool swirly look.  The pictures don't do it justice because the glazed part is shining through and adding a special touch that I really didn't expect. So cool!

I'm really liking my "new" flower pots now! It's awesome how a little bit of paint can totally make over an old item into a new one!  The best part is,  it was a FREE make over since I already had everything on hand! Yay!

Since then I've transplanted the little struggling mum to another container and bought a few new items to add to the porch for its fresh new look.  I found that sweet little welcome mat at Dollar General for $10!  Also, look at this cute one I found on Amazon! Maybe I need one for the back door too?
