Remove Hard Water Buildup Naturally

We have really hard water which I previously spoke about HERE and the deposits tend to build up on the plastic parts of our kitchen faucets.
The buildup looks really creepy and I just don't care to look at it so here is a good way to keep my faucets free of build up.  The picture above is the after of course. I could almost pass this off as brand new!  Its not though, its going on three years old now.  Read about how we installed the new sink HERE.
This is our filtered water faucet.  Now you're probably thinking, if its filtered water then why is it building up?  Our water is really hard and this normally only happens when the filters are getting close to the end of their life.
This is the removable spray nozzle from our kitchen sink faucet.  Eeeww! Yuck!  It happens though. When it gets like this it will cause the sprayer to go in all the wrong directions and makes messes I didn't intend on having to clean up!
Ok, lets get to how to clean this yuckiness up!  You will need vinegar, zip lock baggies and depending on the size of your faucets a twist tie or rubber band.
For the small faucet I just add a small amount of vinegar to the baggie, immerse the built up end into the liquid and then gather the baggie up and tie securely with a twist tie.  For the large nozzle head I use the same steps except I use a rubber band to hold it.
Depending on how bad your build up is you will want to let this set for several hours.  I normally let mine sit overnight if possible.  You could always do this before work one morning and then remove it when you get home that day.
Tah-Dah!  All clean and free of build up! So much better!
This is a much better idea of what happens after the vinegar treatment.  Yucky build up before and nice "new" nozzle head after!  The best part of this little task is there is no scrubbing or scraping involved.  The vinegar does all the work for you!

It doesn't have to be done all at once.  It is a slow process in the works! C-ya next time!

  1. I need to do this because I saw my shower head the other day and thought "Something needs to be done." Your method looks easy and pretty painless. Let's give it a try. I saw your link at Jody & Stan's Simple and Sweet Friday party. Ann Marie @ Iris Abbey www.irisabbey.com

  3. Just wondering if you could use the "cleaning vinegar" and, do you think this would take off the finish, I have a bronze look shower head

    1. Hi there! I've not tried the cleaning vinegar but since its stronger, you may want to dilute it with water first. I just use regular cooking vinegar to clean with. I've never had a problem with it changing any of the plastic "faux look" fixtures that we have in our home. If nothing else, try using a toothbrush with vinegar and just apply it where you need it. Good luck!

    2. Careful with bronze or brass finished hardware and vinegar. Hubby stained brass plating off the faucet in our powder room that way.

  4. I have a brass look faucet and wondered if the finish would be ruined with vinegar and also wondered if you could use "cleaning vinegar"

    1. Hi there! Please see the comment above because I have not tested it with brass look materials and I'm not sure. I do know the cleaning vinegar is a lot stronger and should work faster! Good luck!

  5. Great idea! I always put the shower head in a bowl with vineger, but this is much more practical!
