Stair Step Plant Stand

I've hesitated posting this project.  The reason was, I wasn't there for the entire step by step process while my honey was building it, so I felt like it would be hard to explain how he made it, ya know,  since I wasn't there taking notes and pictures along the way.  I tossed that idea of not posting it out the window because for one, its beautiful and two, he made it for my sweet Mama for this past Christmas.  She asked for a stair step plant stand and he created this!  Anywho, I decided to at least show it to you, even if I don't have a step by step tutorial on it.
Mama wanted an outdoor plant stand for her tiny back porch, so he had to make sure it was just the right size to be able to fit in the small space.  She also requested this stair step version.

Check out this beauty of a plant stand at an awesome price!
My honey has this gift of just creating something straight our of his head.  Me?  Not that talented.  I have to see something first, then I can try and re-create it.  My honey bun, well, you can just tell him what you want and he makes it.  It's a God given talent for sure!  He used all scrap wood that we had on hand, so to be honest, this plant stand was FREE!
This is his mock up version,  He was trying to see if what he had in mind was actually going to work.  Of course it did! He's talented people!
Happily I can share the measurements with you even though I can't give you a step by step tutorial like we normally try and do.  So sorry about that!

Overall Size: 36-1/4" tall and 39" wide.
Shelf Slats: 36-1/4" x 3-1/2"
Legs: 66-1/2" (back) and 50-1/2" (front)
Back/bottom Brace: 36-1/8" and he measured 4" up from bottom for placement.
He cut each slat separately and then used a small piece of the same wood to make sure the spacing was the same all throughout.  He used wood screws and wood glue to attach all the pieces.
He grabbed one of the giant terracotta pots from the patio (remember its winter in this pic, so hence the dead plant, lol)  to see if the shelves could withstand the weight.  He tried it in all the spots and it sure did hold in each and every spot!

After the test, he sanded it all down using our mouse sander so that there wouldn't be any rough spots on it.
We debated on painting it, but I sure did like the look of the natural wood color so I opted to use this indoor/outdoor Minwax urethane to seal it so the Texas weather wouldn't destroy it before its time.  I just used a sponge brush to apply it.
Here it is at Mama's house.  Doesn't she have some beautiful plants?  She still has the whole bottom step to fill up.  She loved it of course and guess what? It fit on her tiny porch like it was made for it! Ha, ha....I'm so funny!  I crack myself up!

Here's another awesome planter my honey made too.  Click here.

It doesn't have to be done all at once.  It is a slow process in the works! C-ya next time!
